Two Possible Routes
Option 1 — The Coastal Route (R301 / N1)
175 km along the coast via Taghazout, Tamri, and Sidi Kaouki. It takes longer (3.5 hours with stops) but is spectacular. The road is tarmacked but can be narrow and winding in places.
Option 2 — The Inland Route (A7 + N8)
255 km via Marrakech on the motorway: this also takes around 3 hours but has no scenic interest and involves tolls.
Recommended
Take the coastal route on the way there and the inland route on the return if you need to get to Marrakech.
5 Must-See Stops on the Coast
- Taghazout (30 mins from Agadir) — have a coffee opposite Anchor Point
- Tamri (1 hour) — wild beach, banana groves
- Cap Sim / Sidi Kaouki (2.5 hours) — vast beach, kitesurfing spot
- Argan oil cooperative — you'll find several along the route for a tasting
- Argan trees with goats — a classic photo opportunity, but be wary of opportunistic guides
Practical Tips
- Set off early (8 am): the route is beautiful in the morning light.
- Fill up with fuel in Agadir: there are few petrol stations after Tamri.
- Strong crosswinds at times: be careful if driving a van.
- Avoid driving at night: the road is narrow and there can be animals.
- Bring water and snacks — there are few shops between Tamri and Sidi Kaouki.
In Essaouira
Parking is not allowed inside the medina. Use a guarded car park at the Bab Doukkala or Bab Marrakech entrances (15–30 MAD/day).
Which Car to Choose?
A city car or a saloon is perfectly adequate. An SUV offers more comfort on the winding roads and for any off-tarmac stops (like Cap Sim).
