Dakhla: The Lagoon, Kitesurfing and the White Dune

Dakhla is the southernmost city in Atlantic Morocco, 1,200 km from Agadir. It's a narrow peninsula set between the ocean and a 400 km² flat, turquoise lagoon. It has become the world capital of kitesurfing and a major ecotourism destination. This guide covers how to get there, local car hire, the best spots, and the White Dune.

How to Get to Dakhla

By Plane

Dakhla Airport (VIL) offers direct flights from Casablanca (2.5 hours) and seasonal flights from Paris (with RAM and kite charter companies). All major Wataluxe agencies deliver vehicles to the airport.

By Car (1200 km from Agadir)

The N1 road is fully paved. Allow 2 to 3 days for a comfortable journey in stages (Sidi Ifni → Laayoune → Boujdour → Dakhla). See our dedicated guide to the Atlantic Sahara.

Hiring a Car in Dakhla

The vehicle fleet in Dakhla is more limited than in Agadir. Book 2 to 3 weeks in advance during the high kitesurfing season (May-September). Many kitesurfers hire an SUV or a pickup truck to transport equipment and access remote spots.

Kitesurfing Season

There are near-daily thermal winds from March to October (averaging 20 knots). The wind peaks from May to August (25–30 knots). Winter (November-February) is calmer and ideal for surfing and exploring the region.

The White Dune

A white sand dune plunging into the lagoon, located 45 km south of Dakhla. It's the region's Instagram icon. Access is by 4x4 only (a 30 km track after the tarmac ends). Many agencies offer 4x4 excursions with a driver (500–800 MAD per person).

Going it alone?

If you hire a 4x4, be aware the track is sandy and getting stuck is a real possibility. Only attempt this with a proper 4x4 (e.g., Land Cruiser, Hilux), with deflated tyres, and never go alone. Most visitors opt for an organised tour.

Other Activities

  • Dragon Island: accessible on foot from the lagoon at low tide.
  • Baie des Étoiles: pristine beach, wild molluscs and oysters.
  • Oyster Farm: tasting sessions directly from the producer.
  • Cap Barbas: lighthouse and ocean views (paved road from Dakhla).
  • Dolphin and whale watching (seasonal).
  • Sport fishing (tuna, grouper).
