What's Always Included (By Law)
All car rentals in Morocco must legally include Third-Party Liability (TPL) insurance. It covers bodily injury and property damage caused to a third party in an accident.
- Unlimited third-party liability for bodily injury
- Material damage to third-party vehicles (up to the legal limit)
- Legal defence for the driver
Protecting Your Rental Vehicle
| Protection | What It Covers | Without It |
|---|---|---|
| CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) | Damage to the vehicle, excluding excess | You pay up to 15,000 MAD |
| TP (Theft Protection) | Theft of the vehicle | You pay up to 30,000 MAD |
| Excess Waiver/Reduction | Reduces excess to 0 | Full excess is payable |
| PAI (Personal Accident Insurance) | Driver/passenger injury | Not covered (travel insurance recommended) |
Good to Know
At Wataluxe, CDW and TP are included as standard with all rentals. An excess waiver is optional and costs between 50 and 150 MAD per day, depending on the vehicle category.
Understanding the Excess
The excess (also known as the franchise) is the maximum amount you are liable to pay in the event of damage or theft. This amount is held on your credit card at the start of the rental and released upon return, provided there is no new damage.
| Category | Standard Excess | Full Waiver (Option) |
|---|---|---|
| City Car | 5,000 – 7,000 MAD | + 50 MAD/day |
| Saloon / SUV | 8,000 – 12,000 MAD | + 80 MAD/day |
| 4x4 | 12,000 – 20,000 MAD | + 120 MAD/day |
| Premium | 15,000 – 30,000 MAD | + 150 MAD/day |
Security Deposit: Amount and Process
The security deposit is a credit card pre-authorisation (a hold, not a direct debit). It is automatically released 3 to 15 days after the vehicle is returned, once the final inspection is approved.
With Wataluxe
The deposit process is structured and transparent: the amount is fixed in the contract, taken as a card pre-authorisation, and released automatically. No partner agency is permitted to charge the card without documented proof (police report, photos, repair estimate).
Absolutely Avoid
Any agency that demands the deposit in cash or requests a blank card imprint. Report this to Wataluxe immediately.
In Case of an Accident: The Procedure
- Ensure everyone is safe and turn on your hazard lights
- Call the police (19) or Gendarmerie (177) — this is mandatory in Morocco
- Wait for the official report (procès-verbal) to be filed
- Notify the rental agency immediately
- Take photos (of the vehicles, number plates, location, and damage)
- Collect the official report (PV) from the police station within 3 days
No Police Report, No Insurance Cover
In Morocco, reporting any material damage to the police is mandatory. Without an official police report (PV), the insurance is void, and the full excess may be charged.
What Is Never Covered
- Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
- Extreme off-road driving (dunes, riverbeds) without a special add-on
- Allowing an undeclared driver to use the vehicle
- Damage to glass, tyres, or the undercarriage (often available as an extra)
- Crossing international borders (contractually forbidden)
- Proven negligence (e.g., leaving keys in the car, unlocked doors)
